When it comes to purchasing precious metals, whether it's a gold necklace or a silver bracelet, the term "hallmark" is something you should definitely be familiar with. But what exactly is a hallmark, and why is it so important? In this post we are going to tell you what's a hallmark and why you should always check for it when buying jewellery.

At Hafeez Jewellery, we take hallmarking very seriously to ensure that every piece of jewellery you buy is authentic and meets the highest standards. Let’s dive into the history and significance of hallmarks, and why you should always check for them when making a purchase.

What is a Hallmark?

A hallmark is a series of official marks stamped on items made of precious metals like gold, silver, platinum, or palladium. These marks serve as a guarantee of the metal's purity, ensuring that you are getting exactly what you are paying for. A hallmark will typically include several different symbols, each representing important information such as the metal type, its purity, the place where it was tested, and the year it was hallmarked.

Hallmarking has a rich history that dates back to the 4th century AD, beginning with silver. Evidence suggests that as early as 350 AD, silver bars were stamped under the authority of Emperor Augustinian, marking the earliest known form of consumer protection. In 14th-century England, the first hallmarking laws were introduced to prevent the selling of substandard precious metals. The Goldsmiths’ Company of London, which is testing our jewels, was granted the right to test and mark gold and silver items to ensure they met strict standards of purity.

As the practice spread across Europe, each country developed its own system of hallmarks. Today, hallmarking is recognized internationally, and the symbols used can vary from country to country, but the fundamental purpose remains the same: to protect consumers and maintain the integrity of the precious metals industry.

Why Hallmarks Matter

Hallmarks are crucial because they provide a level of trust and transparency between the seller and the buyer. When you see a hallmark on a piece of jewellery, you can be confident that the item has been independently tested and meets all the required standards. This is especially important when dealing with high-value items like gold, where the difference in purity can significantly affect the price.

In the UK, hallmarking is mandatory for gold items weighing over 1 gram, silver items over 7.78 grams, and platinum items over 0.5 grams. This is to ensure that the item is not falsely advertised as being of higher purity than it actually is. Without a hallmark, it’s impossible to verify the authenticity and value of the metal, making it a risky purchase.

The hallmark will typically consist of three compulsory marks:

  1. Sponsor’s Mark: This is a unique mark representing the maker or importer of the item. What you'll find on our jewellery is HFZ.

  2. Metal and Purity Mark: This indicates the type of metal (e.g., gold, silver) and its purity in parts per thousand. Our jewellery is made of 18k Gold (18/24 parts of pure gold) so the number you'll see is 750 which stands for 75% pure gold. The London Assay Office also stamps a traditional fineness mark which is represented by a crown for gold.

  3. Assay Office Mark: This shows where the item was tested and hallmarked. In the case of Hafeez Jewellery, this would be the mark of the London Assay Office, represented by a Leopard's head.

Additionally, optional marks may include the year of hallmarking, always marked as a letter in the UK, or additional purity marks.
